The government of Afghanistan has once again disregarded persons with disabilities in the political agenda. The recent example of leaving behind is the composition of the peace negotiating team, announced by the Government of Afghanistan on “Achieving Peace: The Next Chapter in the Afghan-lead Peace Process” in the Geneva Conference on Afghanistan, November 28, 2018.
Persons with disabilities are the well-known scar of war in Afghanistan. Therefore, their engagement in the peace process would further strengthen the thirst of having a sustainable and justice peace and stability in the country. Their involvement is not only representing the war victims, but also advocating for a long-lasting peace. Regretfully, persons with disabilities are neither considered among the negotiating team members nor within the proposed advisory board. Despite insufficient progress in the disability movement in Afghanistan, the frequent neglect indicates that persons with disabilities are not yet a priority in governance. Unexpectedly, it is happening in the era of global advocacy for an inclusive society “Leave No One Behind.” Additionally, it is a violation of the national and international obligations toward the civil and political rights of persons with disabilities. The government of Afghanistan should change the policy of ignorance and implement an inclusive approach in the political arena.
